Things to do in San Antonio

San Antonio is a very old city (as far as North American cities go). Although Native Americans have been in the area for many hundreds of years before, the first record of a European reaching the area is in 1536, when Spanish Explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked there. To put that into perspective, Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa was about 30 years old, William Shakespeare would be born in another 28 years, and Ludwig van Beethoven wouldn’t be born for another 234 years! More than 120 years after Cabeza de Vaca ended up being captured by the natives, another group of Spanish explorers makes its way to the area in 1691 on June 13th, the day of feast of St. Anthony, and decide to name the area “San Antonio”. Over the span of the next several decades, San Antonio grew, becoming the largest Spanish settlement in Texas. With Mexico’s eventual independence from Spain, San Antonio became part of Mexico. Conflict continued in the area. Mexico and Texas were at war for months during 1835-1836. The eventual result was a Texan victory and the creation of the Republic of Texas. A lot has changed since those days, but the city retains a lot of this history in its historic buildings and multicultural society. Here’s a look at what’s going on in San Antonio...
